Week1: Introduction to Sustainable Development
Salam all, for week 1 the course began with ta'aruf activity on Padlet, where all of us need to share about ourselves. Also, Prof.Dr.Suhaimi provide to us a YouTube video to watch. Through that video Prof explain to us about what sustainable development is. At its core sustainable development is defined as "development that meets the needs of present without compromising the ability of future generation to meet their own needs". To achieve true sustainability, there are three fundamental concept we need to follow which is:
1.Living within the certain limits of the earth's capacity
2.Understanding the interconnections among economy, society and environment
3.Maintaining a fair distribution of resources and opportunity for this generation and the next
In this session prof also introduced to us about System Thinking and how it differs from Traditional Thinking. System Thinking is a new paradigm of analysis that encourages and enables us to understand complex and often hidden dynamics throughout the world. That mean we must not only look at the isolated issues, but we must examine the ripple effects and deeper structures that will shape the outcome. Through this way of thinking I start to realize that issues like climate change, poverty, and inequality are not a standalone problem but symptoms of a larger system in need of transformation.
Besides that, our lecturer also explained the evolution of sustainable development which surprisingly went from unsustainable development to Millennium Development (MDGs) and now we have 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) altogether.
We also learned about The 5Ps of Sustainable Development which is a guiding principle that provide a holistic view of Sustainable Development (SDGs):
1.People - ending poverty and hunger in all form
2.Planet - Protecting natural resources and climate for future generation
3.Prosperity - Ensuring all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives
4.Peace - Fostering peaceful, just, and inclusive societies
5.Partnership - Strengthening global solidarity for sustainable development
The 5Ps provide a clear framework that reminds us sustainability isn’t just about the environment, but also about people, peace, and partnerships.
