Week 4: International Framework of Sustainable Development

Image
Salam all, for week 4 we learned about International Framework of Sustainable Matter. It all started way back in 1972 with the UN Conference in Stockholm . Country began realizing that environmental issues needed serious attention. Since then, there's been a chain of major conferences and agreements. One event that really stood up to me was how the Kyoto Protocol tried to make countries cut down on greenhouse gases. They even came out with carbon trading . But not all the countries agreed, especially U.S, which didn't sign it under President Bush. The Global Divide: Developed vs Developing Countries Not all countries are on the same page because they don't all have the same resources or challenges. Developed Countries: had the money and power, but also caused most of the damage to environment Developing Countries: were often told to "go green" but didn't have enough money or tech to do it, but still they started stepping up and pushing back in negotiations S...

Salam all, for week 3 we learned about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development. While modern efforts like the SDGs provide a comprehensive framework, Islam offers its own timeless guidance through Maqasid al Shariah . These objectives mirror the SDGs in both intent and impact. Maqasid al-Shariah aims to protect and promote five essential pillars of human life: 1.Faith 2.Life 3.Intellect 4.Wealth 5.Lineage These principles align closely with the 5Ps of Sustainable Development. Islam, through its spiritual and moral compass, guides Muslims to safeguard these elements, ensuring a just and harmonious society. These are how they interconnected: Life = Peace In Islam, life is sacred. The root word of Islam itself which is salama means peace. Under Maqasid Shariah, life must be lived peacefully, with dignity and freedom from fear, conflict, and oppression. Just like the SDGs promote peace and justice, Islamic teaching demand that life must be protected from any human right violation Int...
